Making Money Online With HubPages

When you venture into the world of making money online you’ll soon find out that you’re not alone. I’m not talking about the millions of people out there who are making a sideline income online, I mean within your own circle of friends. When I first started out trying to make a bit of money online I thought my friends would think I was crazy for even attempting it. However, when I mentioned my online escapades to my friends, I found out that they were at it too!

One of my good friends has a passion for photography and has started selling some of his photo’s using iStockphoto and Shutterstock, another makes music on his computer and has now started to make money online. When it comes to writing online content, I recently discovered that a friend of mine is making some decent money online using HubPages*. After reading some online experiences of people making a sideline income using HubPages, I’ve decided to give it a go and see if the reviews are legitimate.

What Is HubPages?

HubPages is a website that allows you to make money online by writing articles (Hubs) on pretty much any subject that interests you, without the need to set up your own domain name or website.

How Do You Make Money With HubPages?

You can make money online with HubPages in much the same way you would with your own website. When you write a ‘Hub’, HubPages then surrounds the article with advertisements. The revenue generated from those advertisements is then split between you and HubPages with 60% of the revenue going to you and 40% going to HubPages.

Then there’s affiliate marketing. HubPages have affiliate programs set up with both eBay & Amazon, which allow you to promote related products from these websites within your hubs. If a reader clicks through and buys a product from eBay or Amazon, whichever you’ve chosen to use, you will then get a percentage of the sale. It may only be a small percentage but if your hubs are getting lots of page views this can soon add up.

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of HubPages?

When I first heard about HubPages I have to say I was a bit reluctant to give it a go because I prefer having full control over the articles I write and also like to receive 100% of the money they generate, not 60%! As time has gone on though and I’ve experienced running my own website, I can now see the advantages as well as the disadvantages of HubPages compared to starting your own website.

The biggest advantage of HubPages is that you can start publishing online content quickly and easily with no real hassle. When I first set up Money Bulldog I had absolutely no experience of building a website and boy did I get a shock! If you’re willing to put the time and effort into learning about web design and even a bit of programming then by all means give it a go. If however you just want to sit down, write content about subjects that interest you and make a little bit of money on the side, then HubPages allows you to do that.

Another advantage of HubPages is the Ad and affiliate programs they have in place. When you have your own website you can display up to 3 google ad units on any given page. With HubPages your articles can display up to 6 ad units per page, which almost makes up for the fact that you have to share the money you make with HubPages because you’ll be displaying 50% more ad units on every page. The eBay & Amazon affiliate programs on HubPages are also very easy to use and get approved on.

One more big advantage of HubPages is that you’ll get traffic to your articles from day one, rather than waiting around for your articles to make their way up the google search engine rankings. If you’re articles are determined good enough to be ‘Featured’ they will actively be promoted by HubPages to it’s millions of monthly visitors. Don’t get me wrong you won’t get millions of page views but it’s still a massive potential audience.

I still stand by the reasons I was sceptical of HubPages in the first place, I’ll explain why I’ve gone against my gut feeling and given it a go anyway in a minute. For now though, here are a few of the potential downsides to starting up on HubPages compared with starting your own website.

Helping To Grow Somebody Else’s Website!

HubPages is so successful because they have everybody else doing the work for them without having to pay for any staff writers! HubPages have managed to grow their website without having to write the content themselves. Every time you write an article for HubPages you’re helping to grow their online profile instead of your own.

How much do you think HubPages is worth right now?

If you were to write content for your own website instead of HubPages you could be building up the value of your own domain instead of growing the value of someone else’s.

You’re At The Mercy Of HubPages

My first ever attempt at making money online through writing was to sign up for a website called Helium. Helium ran much the same model as HubPages, things went well for a while and I started making money. Not long after I signed up to Helium though, they changed a lot of their terms and conditions which drastically reduced the amount of money writers were making.

This is my main worry with HubPages. If HubPages decided to turn around one day and change their terms and conditions to increase their share of the Ad revenue, there is absolutely nothing you could do about it. You might see your income halve overnight and feel like you’d wasted all that time writing for HubPages when you could’ve been writing for your own website over which you have full control.

There are also many advertising opportunities you might miss out on by not having your own website.

So Why Am I Giving It A Go?

You might be asking, ‘If you’re so skeptical about the HubPages model then why have you decided to give it a go?’ The answer is simple, Time!

I set up Money Bulldog because I enjoy sharing my knowledge of personal finance with others. As much as I enjoy writing about finance, from time to time I get the urge to publish articles about one of my other loves, nutrition! At this point, I don’t feel I have the time to set up and run another website and still give Money Bulldog and its followers the attention they deserve.

Maybe in the future I’ll find the time and regret my decision to go down the Hubpages route, stay tuned and you’ll find out. For now though I’d just like to publish articles about another subject I enjoy and perhaps generate some extra income for my efforts, I’ll keep you updated on how I get on.

  1. Interesting, I’ll give your page a look. So can anyone around the world get involved with this or do you have to live in a specific area? Smart idea to build their site though.

This is one thing that I wanted to try out. I always felt that the article could get great traction right off the start. Let me know how it goes.

I’d love to hear how much you make from a typical article. If you can make $30+ then it’d be worth it in my opinion…

    • Yeah that would be nice, I’ve noticed the articles have had a bit of traffic from Google so I’ll see what happens and update everyone on how things are going in a couple of months.

  4. I feel like I used to hear about hub pages a lot a few years back, but the buzz has died down. I used to write quiet a bit for demand studios, but then the articles got fewer and fewer and it wasn’t really worth my time anymore. Interested to hear how things go for you with hub pages. Keep us updated.

  5. Check back in with us in a few months and let us know how it goes!

Interesting, I never really gave any thought to writing for another website. I’ll have to take a close look at it, especially since I’m not especially prolific and at times sweat over what I’m writing for hours but is sounds like it’s at least worth checking into.

    • I’m not the fastest writer out there, I like to be 100% happy with what I’ve written before I send it live. I thought it was worth giving HubPages a try though, I’ll let you know how it goes!
